More updates
First, internships. I emailed that Australian company about that possibility. I was told they’d get back to me soon. Still nothing from NYU. Second webseries. My mom’s friends and you all are really pulling through for us, we’re up to 39% with 19 days left to go! Thanks again, we really couldn’t do this without you. Considering contacting Kickstarter about getting...

Shamelessly overpromoting CAPS, but we're at 36%... →
CAPS is the story of an underfunded and unloved children’s department of a public library, and the four employees who keep the department running. It is a fast-paced satire that deals with library budgets, censorship, and the employee’s quirky interpersonal conflicts. We can’t afford to rent equipment to shoot it if we don’t get your help! Please please if you can...

General update.
I had my follow up interview at NYU-TV a week ago. They said they’d get back to me when they worked out who was working where, but I’ve yet to hear from them. Also trying to work out my summer internship schedule, but the Tisch internship coordinator has yet to email me back either. Thinking of going to visit him next week, because I really need to get that figured out. The Australian...

Adventures in Funding our Webseries: Day One
My dear friend Erin and I are making a webseries. We’re not allowed to use school equipment, so we need funding to rent from an exterior place. Today, we set up a Kickstarter for it. 5 Backers $145 Dollars out of $1430 29 Days left Not bad! Two of the backers are actually members of my family, but it still counts. Thanks to everyone who donated to us today! If you would like to help,...

erinrose-obrien: Reasons why you should kickstart CAPS: The Webseries (my webseries): We r 2 kewl gurlz wh0 g0 2 nyu. ^ It was written by one “kewl gurl” who is a female comedy writer, and the series is directed by another “kewl gurl.” Don’t you want to support women in the male-dominated field of television? It’s funny! Everybody needs to laugh sometimes! Even Newt Gingrich! If you don’t...

Last but not least, I went to Gravid Water...
I wasn’t sure who would be performing. Scott Adsit wasn’t going to be there because he was just in LA for the SAG awards. I’m not entirely familiar with everyone from the comedy world, so Erin was more excited than I as two people she deeply admires were there. But then we got there and found out Peter Gwinn of The Colbert Report is actually a GW regular who’s just been on...

Internship update
Talked to the Tisch internship coordinator again. He thinks he might be able to get me a summer job at The Onion. He’s currently taking a look at my resume. This will also have a follow up sometime soon.

Adventures in Job Hunting
I applied for a job at the NYU-TV station, and I went in for an interview last week. It was exciting! I’m a lifeguard right now, which is frustratingly unrelated to my passions. I think I interviewed well, at least I hope I did. The most exciting part was being told that I’m the first underclassman to even be considered for a producer position. I’m incredibly proud of that. ...

Went to a taping of Flop House.
It’s a podcast run by two Daily Show writers (Elliott Kalan, Dan McCoy) and one gentleman I was not familiar with. Flop House is about bad movies. This particular episode was about 12 Rounds, a “thriller” type movie where the cops had to stop a guy who… I’m not really sure, actually. He wanted to steal a bunch of money but was hiding it under a cover of a different...

What Stephen Colbert is doing is brilliant.
He’s pointing out nearly every flaw in the American electoral system through his use of his (now Jon Stewart’s) SuperPAC and now his attempted Presidential run. This whole use of Herman Cain being on the ballot as a vessel to gauge interest is absolutely genius. He is my favorite person on television, followed very closely by Stewart. His satire is fantastically well thought out, and...

NFFTY is the largest youth film festival in the world, and it was founded by an alum from my high school. It’s a really great environment. I won an audience award there last year, so I’m really looking forward to this year.

Work and concerns
I’m currently applying for my second job, at NYU-TV, as a producer/camera operator/editor. That’s the perfect job for me, so I’m really excited, but I’m a little worried that I’m putting too much on my plate. If I get this job, it’ll probably be my weekend job, and I’ll still be lifeguarding during the week between classes. With that, being co-director on...

Summer internship idea?
My family friend’s brother works for an animation company in Australia that hires 30 or so interns. I’m going to be forwarded the information soon and it’s an idea for a summer job. My two problems are 1. I can’t jumpstart classes for Sophomore year, and therefore will have to postpone study-abroad and 2. That might get expensive unless I find a paid position as well. But...

Today I met Wyatt Cenac.
I went to his event, Shouting at the Screen, at the ReRun theater. It’s a cozy little place with what appeared to be car seats as theater chairs, and we screened Cleopatra Jones. Wyatt and his friend provided commentary on it. It was pretty fantastic. Afterwords, I hovered around for a bit and then went up to him and said that I admired his work on The Daily Show. He thanked me and asked my...

Today I attended the IAVA 5th Annual Heroes Gala. Sort of. I wasn’t very important press, so I was only invited to the reception. Unfortunately, Stephen Colbert was rather late, so this was the only interaction I had with him.

I think it went fairly well. He told me that he’ll help me with my resume if I come back soon, and in the spring he can get me emails for people on Colbert, Stewart, Fallon, Anderson, and anything else I may want to look into. I’m slightly worried about my lack of TV experience, but I’m hoping I can find some way of patching that hole with his help. Plus, Colbert and Stewart...

Discussing the possibility of interning at The...
One of the professors at my school suggested it. I was going to go with The Daily Show, as that’s where I hope to end up, but I figured it would be a smarter move to wait until senior year for that, because then they could hire me right out of college. (*crosses fingers*) Anyways, point being, I was talking to her about how I was sad that I couldn’t intern yet, and she said they might...

The marriage of acting and improvisation: Gravid...
erinrose-obrien: Obviously I’m not a UCB show review blog, but as a student of comedy, I feel it’s my duty to tell my blog when I see cool comedy things. Essentially Gravid Water is the marriage of acting and improvisation. I came for the improv, I fell in love with the acting. The actors have a scene memorized, and the improvisers fill in the blanks where the second character in the scene...
